MAGIC YEARS - THE COMPLETE SET 「栄光の軌跡 VOL. 1～3」 / QUEEN (1987 / 1992)

    

フレディが存命中に制作されたこの「Magic Years - The Complete Set / 栄光の軌跡 VOL. 1～3」（2枚組レーザー・ディスク）は、クイーンの歴史を映像で綴ったドキュメンタリー作品で、元々は1987年に本国のイギリスに於いて単品及び3本組のVHSとしてリリースされていたもの。ちなみに、アメリカでもこの日本盤が発売される前年の1991年にレーザー・ディスクのフォーマットで発売されているが、日本盤とはジャケットが異なっている。

[VOL. 1] は、デビューからボヘミアン・ラプソディの大ヒットに至るまで。[VOL. 2] は、ジョン・ディーコンが熱狂的に迎えられたのは日本が初めてだったと語る1975年の初来日の映像に始まり、ヨーロッパ、アメリカ、南米ツアーといった流れ。そして、[VOL. 3] は、ライヴ・エイドを経てマジック・ツアーに至るまでといった内容。ライヴ映像は元より、レコーディング風景や、その他多くのミュージシャンがクイーンについて語るインタビューなど、ファンにとっては興味深い映像が盛り沢山（全3時間）の内容。

なお、日本ではこの"The Complete Set"のレーザー・ディスクは、"VOL. 1"、"VOL. 2"、"VOL. 3"と個別に分けた単品でも発売されており、その他にもVHS（単品及び3本組）のフォーマットでも発売されていた。

しかしながら、残念なことに、現在のところDVD化はされていないようだ。なお、ドキュメンタリーの映像作品としては、フレディが亡くなった後の1995年にも、2枚組レーザー・ディスクの「Champions Of The World / メイド・イン・ヘヴン ～ 伝説のチャンピオン」（こちらも未DVD化）がリリースされている。

ただし、その"Champions Of The World"はフレディの死後に制作されたビデオ作品ということもあり、そういった意味に於いては、ビデオの最後は「クイーンは再び活動を始めた」とのナレーションで締めくくられるこの"Magic Years"とは同じドキュメンタリー作品でも性質は大きく異なると言えるのではないかと思う。
